About The Book

“Peace is not the absence of war; it is the triumph of understanding.”

In The Conflict Resolution Strategies of President Olusegun Okikiola Obasanjo GCFR, renowned scholar Professor Sidi Osho delivers an in-depth and unprecedented analysis of one of Africa’s most influential statesmen, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, and his role as a mediator, peacebuilder, and bridge between warring factions across Africa.

Drawing from extensive interviews, historical case studies, and first-hand narratives, this book unpacks the principles, strategies, and philosophies that guided his efforts to turn the tide of conflict toward reconciliation and national stability.

From the chaos of Nigeria’s Civil War to the diplomatic tables of the African Union, Obasanjo’s path has been one of transformation, from soldier to statesman, from president to peacemaker.

The book explores:

  • Liberia: How Obasanjo’s intervention through ECOWAS diplomacy persuaded Charles Taylor to relinquish power and end fifteen years of civil war, an act that restored democratic stability and ushered in the election of Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, Africa’s first elected female president.
  • Sierra Leone: His decisive leadership in supporting ECOMOG operations that transformed a war-torn nation from child soldiers and amputations to reconciliation and recovery.
  • Sudan: His chairmanship of the African Union Peace and Security Council, leading to the negotiations that birthed the Comprehensive Peace Agreement of 2005, a milestone that paved the way for the independence of South Sudan.
  • Burundi and the Great Lakes Region: His discreet but influential role in guiding fragile post-war transitions and fostering dialogue among political and military factions.
  • The Niger Delta: His domestic leadership in addressing militancy and economic discontent through dialogue, amnesty initiatives, and the establishment of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), showing that even internal unrest could be managed through empathy, understanding, and reform.

Each account is drawn from verifiable diplomatic records, personal memoirs, and field research. These moments are not just episodes in African history; they are living lessons in the art of mediation, persuasion, and moral authority.

Supported by reflections and forewords from national icons including H.E. General Ibrahim Babangida GCFR, H.E. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan GCFR, H.E. Atiku Abubakar GCON, Aare Afe Babalola SAN, and HRH Oba (Prof.) Saka Matemilola, this book transcends biography to become a framework for leadership that fuses moral integrity with pragmatic governance, a timely reminder that true statesmanship lies in the ability to heal divisions rather than exploit them.

Finally, it culminates in a visionary proposal: the establishment of Africa’s first AI-powered Conflict Resolution Centre (OCRC) in Abuja, designed to institutionalise peace mediation across the continent.
